< Previous10 Let’s Talk Bayside Watch our garden grow COMMUNITY “Full of colour” was the vision for the Little Brighton Reserve Community Garden as a space to bring the community together. Local resident Helen Gries is passionate about the new community garden in Brighton East — and is excited that whilst still in its infancy, it is already flourishing. Planting days of vibrant, native flora are seeing residents and birdlife alike flocking to the garden. “It’s a community garden — we want it to be colourful and joyous; we want it to have personality and attract rare birds, bees, butterflies and people of all ages,” said Ms Gries. “The amount of people that I’ve met in the last several months has been amazing. It’s given me a lot of pleasure.” Community gardens can play an important role in community development and provide a wide range of environmental, social and economic benefits. Council supported the installation of the garden working with the community on the design and initial planting. The approximate 4km route will include new pathways and upgrades to existing ones to improve safety for riders of all ages and abilities. Whether you’re commuting to the station, popping to the shops, or going to work, school or sports, we want to encourage higher participation of riding and walking, and safe sustainable travel options for our road users. The project delivers on our Bicycle Action Plan 2019 and Bayside 2050 Community Vision and paves the way towards reducing transport emissions and supporting healthier lifestyles. We’d like your feedback on the proposed plans. Would you or your family members use these bike paths? What other infrastructure, such as water fountains and bike repair stations should we consider including along the route? Consultation closes 26 February 2023. Bayside has multiple community groups and organisations that offer engaging programs and activities — they’re all designed to bring people together. Learn to prepare a delicious bento box — Japan’s answer to the all-in- one packed lunch — with the Bayside Japan Club. The club was established in 2017 by Toshiko Tega and Machi Mori as a meeting opportunity in Council’s Seniors Centre for older Japanese-speaking residents in Bayside. Membership has grown from nine to twenty-seven members, and it’s not hard to see why. “The club has organized a number of highly popular classes and activities including a Japanese music festival, gyoza (or dumpling)-making class, Sumi-e or Japanese calligraphy and the art of the Japanese tea ceremony. These were highlights of last year’s Bayside Healthy Ageing Seniors Festival,” Ms Tega said. Cross-cultural collaborations also led to joint events between Bayside Japan Club and the Senior Russian Social Club Friendship group. The Billilla Artists Studio Program offers free studio space for 12 months to artists from across Victoria and Bayside. This is just one of the many ways we support the arts in Bayside. Seven fantastic artists have been selected for 2023. In the Beckett Studio you’ll find local textile artist Carolyn Cardinet, whose work focuses on the repurposing of post-consumer materials. Grainger Studio hosts actor, director and playwright Francis Greenslade. His projects involve a new work about the ageing process and translations of French theatre pieces. So, the program provides the perfect vehicle for calm concentration. “Working from home is tricky,” he said. “The kids need driving somewhere; there’s a knock on the door; a domestic crisis has to be addressed! To be able to go somewhere private and just sit and write is a fantastic gift.” In Marshall Studio, you’ll find Jacquie Byron: a published author whose personal challenge is to produce a new manuscript. Parr Studio hosts local professional artist Sean McDowell, known for his large-scale abstractions in painting and sculpture. Another local, Marie Honor, can be found in the Laundry Studio. Maris is an artist with a view to surrealism and magic realism. Next door in Tayler Studio you’ll find and maybe hear the sounds of William Murray, a talented musician, violist and composer. At Traill Studios is Yvette Coppersmith, a highly regarded painter whose arresting self-portrait won the 2018 Archibald Prize. Yvette is particularly interested in the depiction of women and the subject of the female gaze and gathers inspiration from growing up in Bayside. Now in its fifth year, the much- anticipated annual exhibition, showcases the high-calibre work of artists – including year 11 and 12 VCE students — who live in or have a connection to Bayside. In support and celebration of emerging and established local artists and aspiring art students, Bayside Local is an eclectic and energising array of works that range from traditional landscape painting to experimental abstraction, intriguing photographic images, and creative sculpture. Bayside’s stunning 17-kilometre Coastal Art Trail acknowledges the work of notable Australian artists, and Bayside’s unique coastal environment continue to be an inspiration for local artists. This includes the work of artist Charlotte Watson. Charlotte is a regular sea swimmer at Sandringham Beach whose body of work centres on capturing the ever-changing nature of the Bay. “I am delighted to have a selection of my monotypes included in the Bayside Local exhibition,” said Ms Watson. “Though I have shown between Australia and Aotearoa, I have not shown in any municipal galleries. It is wonderful to be included in this exhibition that allows me to bring my work to new audiences.” Don’t miss your chance to support local art in our community. Exhibition open until 5 March 2023.
