Local businesses continue to receive Council support in the way of rebates on fees for Food Act registrations and Footpath Trading permits and access to Council’s rate hardship policy. Bayside Council's popular outdoor dining program is also supporting traders to recover from the financial fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic. Mayor Cr Laurence Evans OAM said community support has become a lifeline for many businesses. “It’s great to hear the positive impact the outdoor dining has had and the recent further easing of restrictions paves the way for better trading conditions for all Bayside businesses,” Cr Evans said. “The ongoing support from Council and the community will go far in the social and economic recovery of Bayside’s traders. We know the risk is far from over but thanks to the incredible work of all Victorians, we’re continuing to stay safe and stay open and see the Bayside businesses we all love, return to life again.” Bayside business Smile Buffalo was identified as an outbreak location during the Black Rock cluster towards the end of last year. The eatery was applauded for their check-in process that helped facilitate effective contract tracing, bringing the outbreak swiftly under control. Smile Buffalo owner Navara Kingtada is grateful for the community support. “The support from the community has been overwhelming and we’re so happy to welcome people back into our restaurant,” Navara said. Residents are reminded to follow current restrictions, continue to sign in when visiting venues and get tested if you have any symptoms of COVID-19. Developed by a representative Community Panel of local residents over February - July 2020 and informed by over 850 community members’ ideas and feedback, the Vision is a consensus aspirational view of a desired future that sets out the key priorities, aspirations and values for our municipality. Under the new Local Government Act 2020, all Victorian Councils must develop a Community Vision statement. Councils must also advocate on behalf of the community to other level of governments to ensure their aspirations are met. Over the current Council term, Council will work with our magnificent community – both individuals and groups, to bring the Vision to life with the implementation of our four-year Council Plan. Find out more o bayside.vic.gov.au/communityvision Council Plan Panel deliberates COUNCIL In February this year, 10,000 invitations were sent out to randomly selected households. Thank you to everyone who applied to help determine Bayside’s priorities over the next four years. An independent company sorted the applications to ensure there was broad representation across the municipality and all demographic categories. A 40-member panel will now work with Council staff and independent facilitators to review the draft Council Plan and ensure it aligns to the priorities of the Bayside Community Vision 2050 and the online community feedback. The final Council Plan will be considered and adopted at the July Council meeting. Let’s Talk Bayside 7Room to grow MAJOR PROJECT Hurlingham Preschool has inspiring new indoor and outdoor spaces to explore, play and learn. Nestled in a parkland setting in Brighton East, the popular Hurlingham Preschool has been transformed over five months into a larger, much more functional early years education centre. “We’re loving our wonderful new facilities,” said Operations and Enrolments Manager Sam Jensen-Muir. “The collaborative and thoughtful design engages children, families and staff from the moment they walk through the door. The design incorporates an earthy colour scheme, abundance of natural light and dynamic playground with water pump, creek bed, sandpit and digging patch, to create the sense that the preschool is a seamless part of Hurlingham Park. The preschool has been creatively reimagined to include two large indoor play spaces; a demonstration kitchen; new meeting room; and remodelled bathroom amenities for children and teachers. During the upgrade, the children had a fantastic time learning in the former Brighton Anglers Club building on the other side of Hurlingham Park. “We couldn’t have hoped for a better start to our daughter’s education – the beautiful new facilities, friendly and welcoming teachers and staff, and supportive and connected community,” says parent Danielle. “Our daughter happily bounces through the door when she arrives.” This much-needed upgrade was jointly funded by the Victorian Government and Bayside City Council. Mayor Cr Laurence Evans OAM said the upgrade is an exciting offering for families in Bayside’s north. “The facility provides wonderful spaces for inside and outside sensory play. We’re proud to have supported this important upgrade and we’re confident the preschool will bring joy to many children and their families,” Cr Evans said. Black Rock & Sandringham Conservation Association (BRASCA) volunteer Andrew Wright started volunteering again earlier this year. “I was looking at getting back into volunteering and was looking at local groups,” Mr Wright explained. “I registered through the Bayside volunteering website - put in some information about myself, my studies and what I was looking for and someone got in touch and suggested BRASCA.” Bayside City Council has over 400 registered volunteers who collectively contribute 1500 hours of service per month. Andrew highly recommends volunteering. “Go and give it a try. The people are always very accommodating and approachable. There’s a lot out there that can fit your schedule.” 17– 23 May is National Volunteer Week. Thank you to the many volunteers who donate time, expertise and passion to make Bayside a better place.
