This years theme is Learn. Love. Live and there is no better way to do this than to get involved in the many activities and events Bayside has on offer this October for you to enjoy. Bayside City Council is proud to present the 2023 Bayside Healthy Ageing Seniors Festival. This month-long celebration offers free and low-cost activities and events that cater to a variety of interests. Kick start the festival by enjoying an electrifying tribute to Elvis with a Shake, Rattle and Roll live music performance, immersing yourself in the timeless tunes of the King of rock n roll. Experience the captivating storytelling of Don McQueen, the renowned bush balladeer, as he shares his profound love for Australian history and poetry. For a heartwarming and inspiring cinematic experience, spend an afternoon at the movies with “Mrs Harris goes to Paris”, an enchanting film that will transport you to a world of dreams and discovery and captivate your heart and imagination. The Bayside Healthy Ageing Seniors Festival is an opportunity to break free of limitations and embrace the boundless possibilities that await. Immerse yourself in the enchanting world of Elvis Presley’s iconic music and experience the magic of his timeless hits, including Heartbreak Hotel, Jailhouse Rock and Love Me Tender. Damian’s electrifying performances, characterised by his remarkable vocal range and mesmerising stage presence, pay homage to the musical legacy that continues to resonate with audiences of all ages. The MC for the day will be award-winning TV personality Carol O’Halloran, who will keep you entertained and moving before and during the show. As part of your ticket, enjoy a hot drink from the Coffee Rider & Co coffee cart (BYO mug or KeepCup and water bottle), a sausage in bread that has been cooked to perfection by Brighton Lions Club and a sweet treat from the Bayside Country Women’s Association. Prepare to be enthralled as he shares engaging stories, recites Australian bush poetry, and delivers hilarious modern poems that will truly fascinate listeners. This enchanting film follows the story of a widowed cleaning lady in 1950s London who falls madly in love with a couture Dior dress and decides that she must have one of her own. Determined to make her dream a reality, Mrs Harris embarks on an adventure to Paris that not only transforms her own outlook but also influences the future of the iconic fashion house. This free event for seniors, and their friends and families, kicks off from 12 pm and runs until 7 pm featuring great immersive music, dance and performances – as well as displays and information stands. Programming for the day includes singing workshops with Jonathon Welch AM (Choir of Hard Knocks), Footscray Gypsy Orchestra, One Spirit Africa before the day draws to a glorious close with SOS When: Sunday 1 October 2023 Time: 12pm – 7pm Where: Federation Square Precinct, Cnr of Swanston & Flinders St, Melbourne Cost: FREE Bookings: No bookings required 6 | Bayside Healthy Ageing Seniors Festival 2023 performing the much-loved tunes of ABBA. The entire precinct of Federation Square will be activated, so you can choose to participate or just relax and enjoy the entertainment at the Main Stage, River Stage or in the Edge Theatre. Celebration Day on Sunday 1 October coincides with the United Nations International Day of Older Persons (UNIDOP) – so this year seniors can feel truly celebrated as we launch a festival designed to encourage older people to live their best life on this internationally recognised day. 8 days of FREE public transport To assist getting people to senior events, the Victorian Government is providing all Victorian Seniors Card holders, with eight days of free transport from Sunday 1 October to Sunday 8 October 2023. How to travel during this period Remember to always carry your Seniors myki and Victorian Seniors Card with you on public transport. Touch on and off as usual, you won’t be charged. The system is set to automatically recognise Seniors myki cards so you can travel for free across this time. Where you can go You’ll be able to travel for free on all public transport in Victoria, including Melbourne trains, trams and buses and regional trains, coaches and buses. This year, the Dance will feature a fabulous 12-piece big band, the big band delighting dancers and vocalists playing tunes guaranteed to keep fast-footed dancers on the floor for the entire event. This Melbourne Town Hall provides the perfect backdrop for hundreds of seniors to dress up and show off their skills, or just have fun, to their favourite tunes. Or, if you prefer to watch – you can also feel part of the action, observing from the balcony. Enjoy a delicious devonshire tea in Tamar's tea room. Monday, 2 October 2023 Silver Salties Yoga Class hosted by Sandringham Life Saving Club Yoga effectively enhances physical health and overall wellness, building strength and flexibility and increasing physical awareness. Led by an experienced instructor, all fitness levels and abilities are welcome. Tuesday, 3 October 2023 Yoga and Meditation for Every Body at any Level hosted by Hampton Community Centre Experience the calmness, stability and strength in both the body and mind in this free yoga and meditation class. Hampton Book Chat hosted by Bayside Council Libraries Come along for an informal chat about the book/s you are reading each month. No prescribed reading, just an opportunity to talk about books with our friendly librarian and other members of our Bayside Library community. Line Dancing For Beginners hosted by Modern Line Dancing Inc. A free "Come and Try" line dancing class designed for anyone who would like to learn and practice basic line dancing. This class promises to exercise your body and mind in a friendly and welcoming environment. No experience needed. Beach Walk hosted by Brighton Bayside Life Activities Club Come and enjoy a pleasant walk along the path from Green Point (opposite Brighton Beach Hotel) to coffee in Hampton St and back. Wednesday, 4 October 2023 Bayside Carers Corner hosted by Bayside Council Community Care This event is for Bayside carers to connect, share experiences and learn about available supports and services. Guest speakers Alfred Health Carers Services will present on the range of services and resources on offer to support carers.
