Courtesy Lauraine Diggins Fine Art, Melbourne Foreword Bayside: Portrait of place celebrates the tenth anniversary of Bayside Gallery opening its doors to the public in 2011. This exhibition brings together sixty-two paintings, sculptures, ceramics and works on paper by ffty-three artists featuring, amongst other things, imagery of the local landscape created by artists who have lived in the area. While this important exhibition documents the historical signifcance of Bayside in Australian art history, Bayside City Council is proud that it continues to support and nourish creativity in our community in a number of ways: through the commissioning of public art; providing artists with free studio space as part of the Billilla Artists Studio program; supporting our performing and visual artists through partnerships with the Bayside Chamber Orchestra and Advantage Road Studios. Our Coastal Indigenous Trail includes sculptures by contemporary Indigenous artists which were created based on stories authored by Boonwurrung elder N’arweet Dr Carolyn Briggs AM. We are privileged to live in a place that has so much natural beauty and we are equally lucky to see such beauty interpreted in so many ways. This amazing collection of work celebrates our artistic heritage and brings it to life through the eyes of artists past and present. Thank you to the public institutions who have agreed to lend from their collections and to the many private lenders who have made their works available for the exhibition; we thank you for your generosity. This exhibition would not be possible without your support. I commend Andrew Gaynor, guest curator of Bayside: Portrait of place for an exhibition that provides us with a contemporary portrait of Bayside, lovingly drawn.
