< PreviousRegister your furry friends PETS It is time for cat and dog owners to ensure they have registered their pets. Pet registration allows us to find your pet if it’s lost, fund pet-related education and programs, and maintain and fund pet-friendly parks and facilities. Cats and dogs who are aged over three months must be registered by 10 April. Pet owners will receive notices in the mail or email with instructions on how to register your pet. All cats and dogs must be microchipped before they can be registered, and the registration number will be required when you go online to pay. Pet safety There has been an increase in anti- social dog behaviour over summer. Many of the issues were caused by dogs being off their leashes. Locations of off-leash areas around Bayside can be found on our website, however as a rule, all dogs need to be on on-leash unless in a designated area for the safety of animals and people. Carrying a dog poo bag and picking up your pet’s waste is also important as the waste can be toxic for our environment and cause problems for the community. Responsible pet ownership is essential for the health and safety of the community and other animals, including wildlife, as well as protection for the natural environment. Nursery volunteers along with Council and Citywide staff have been busy preparing for the 2024 retail season, which will be marked by a community Gala Day on Saturday 6 April. Annie Dennis has been volunteering in the sales area for several years, and loves sharing her knowledge with customers. “It is wonderful to see delight on their faces when they gain insight into the wonders of nature in their own back yard. It gives me a great sense of reward,” she said. The nursery started as a community endeavour in 1978 as a way for residents to protect and enhance the natural environment. Today, the nursery remains a not- for-profit community asset supported by Council, supplying around 100,000 indigenous plants, grasses and trees that are plant in local reserves, golf courses, schools, foreshore, and public and private gardens. “The nursery is unique as the plants are propagated by volunteers onsite and sold by volunteers in the retail centre,” Annie said. “It is a hub for people to learn about, and purchase, local indigenous plants for their gardens.” Marilyn and Tig Simmons (pictured left and middle) do everything together, including spending Thursday mornings volunteering at the nursery. While Tig is usually at the potting bench, where they can pot up to 140 plants on a good run, Marilyn uses her superior fine motor skills at the propagation table. “Volunteering at the nursery is a fantastic way for us to give back, share our skills, learn new skills and just have a wonderful time with plants and friendly people – it’s all very relaxing actually,” Tig said. Boyd (1953-2022) spent four decades painting the atmospheric moods and pictorial characteristics of Port Phillip Bay. Curator Joanna Bosse worked closely with Lynne’s husband, artist Peter De Garis, to select a diverse range of lyrical paintings from Boyd’s career. “Lynne Boyd is an incredible artist who lived in Bayside, creating beautiful evocative works that represent the Bay since the mid-1980s,” Joanna said. “Visitors to the exhibition will respond to these works because they’ll see what is familiar to them, plus feel a connection on a metaphysical level.” As Joanna and Peter worked on the exhibition, they met in Lynne’s Brighton East studio which remains the same as the day the artist left it behind. “My visits to Lynne’s studio were warm and generous although tinged with sadness,” Joanna said. “Her presence is so strong, the paint brushes are still out, there are snippets of poems that she loved, just a real sense of her.” The result is an exceptional exhibition, Lynne Boyd: Holding the silver sea - a connected collection showcasing Bayside’s expanse of sea, horizon, and sky. “Everyone will have a favourite piece but for me Day – Clouds, St Kilda , an abstract from 1994/5, is an early manifestation of Lynne’s signature style of ethereal and mysterious works in pale grey, blue and lilac. It’s what emerges later in her career for which she becomes well known,” Joanna said. Lynne Boyd: Holding the Silver Sea is on exhibition until 28 April. Celebrate Reconciliation Week in Bayside National Reconciliation Week - 27 May to 3 June - is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. The theme for 2024, Now More Than Ever, is a reminder to all of us that no matter what, the fight for justice and the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people will — and must — continue. This year we will hold our annual Flag Raising Ceremony on Saturday 25 May to mark Reconciliation Week and announce the winners of the Ellen Jose Student Reconciliation Awards, now in its sixth year.
