This service is designed for people who are injured or living with mobility issues that make it difficult to leave the house. Books, magazines, and other library materials are tailored to your taste and delivered to your door. Pam has been accessing this service since 2020 following an accident that left her unable to walk. “I am an avid reader and have been using Bayside Libraries since I was a child,” Pam said. “When I couldn’t walk after my accident and didn’t have anyone to take me to the library, I was thrilled to be eligible for this wonderful Home Library Service. “Every four weeks a lovely volunteer turns up with a bag of 4 or 5 books that someone at the library has taken time to select the things that I am interested in such as crime novels, biographies, books about the film industry.” To join Bayside Home Library Service, residents will need to complete a membership eligibility test, which is assessed annually. Members can borrow up to 15 items from the library’s collection of fiction, non-fiction, large print books, magazines, CDs, DVDs, and items in languages other than English. Kindles and Kobos are also available to loan. Your personalised selection will be delivered on the same day each month to your private residence, retirement village or accommodation facility. “I have loved the continuity of this service, I’ve had the same volunteer delivering my books for the whole time I’ve been part of this service,” Pam added. “If you or someone you know loves reading and is housebound, please get in touch with Council and see if you’re eligible. It is a wonderful service delivered by lovely people.” Find out more bayside.vic.gov.au/homelibrary SPECIAL DELIVERY Pam (left) loves getting her books delivered to her by Council Officer Rudi (right). As you age, there are many services we can provide which will help you live safely in your own home for as long as possible. For more than 50 years, our residents have trusted Council to deliver high-quality aged care services to maximise your independence and quality of life at home. Assistance may include entry level services such as cleaning and household chores, meals, shopping and minor home maintenance, through to more intense services such as showering, nursing care, physiotherapy and occupational therapy. We can also help you stay connected to the community through transport assistance, interest-based social activities and bus outings. We pride ourselves on employing our own highly skilled staff, who are all police checked, and some speak additional languages to English. Assessments to receive services are conducted by external organisations. When you have your assessment, you can advise the assessor that you want Bayside City Council to deliver your services, if that is your preference. Council does not have waiting lists for services, so please contact us on 1300 870 744 if you are on a waitlist for a service with another organisation and would prefer to have us provide your service with minimal delay. You can contact our team at any time during the assessment process for aged care services. If you have a question or need help accessing aged care support, we’re here to help. Looking after your needs AGED CARE Let’s Talk Bayside 11 PRIORITISING CARE Fenella (left) and Richard (right) enjoy assisting our residents as Community Care workers.12 Let’s Talk Bayside We’re forming a community panel and we need your voice to make it truly representative and impactful. This is your chance to play a vital role in shaping the future of Bayside. Our community panel will discuss, debate and deliberate on key issues and plans, providing insights and opinions to guide important decisions. Following Victoria’s local government elections in October 2024, Bayside will swear in a new Council. The first major responsibility will be to develop the Council Plan 2025 – 2029 and review the Financial, Asset, and Municipal Health and Wellbeing plans, with help from our community panel. These plans ensure Council makes the most of funds collected through rates by appropriately managing our assets including roads, drains, footpaths, buildings, and open space, and providing community support and services. Join the panel We are looking for nominations from people who represent all ages, backgrounds, and Bayside suburbs to join our community panel. From these nominations, 40 will be independently and randomly selected to represent our community. Local resident Tracey said she got a greater understanding of Council’s impact by participating on the panel in 2021. “I feel Bayside is a progressive Council by asking the community and I’m proud to be part of a community that does ask,” said Tracey. The panel will be briefed by Councillors, staff and external experts and small group discussions will be guided by independent facilitators to make sure everyone feels supported and heard. The Community Panel will meet for eight scheduled sessions between February and May 2025. Panellists will be paid $750 to support their participation. If you are interested, nominations open on 5 August and you have until 10 November 2024 to complete the nomination form. It is part of the 2024 Victoria-wide Seniors Festival, which centres around the theme “Explore. Engage. Evolve”. This annual festival celebrates healthy ageing through local activities and events that suit a range of interests. Bayside resident Jeanette, who is also a member of Council’s Healthy Ageing Reference Group, has participated in previous years and is looking forward to the 2024 festival. “What I enjoy most about the Seniors Festival is the variety of activities and getting together with others to enjoy what’s on offer, while making new friends,” Jeanette said. “The festival also caters for all ages, and financial means, with many free activities.” The Bayside Healthy Ageing Seniors Festival program will be available online and in print from early September. We are seeking community groups interested in establishing their own produce gardens across Bayside, with potential locations in Sandringham, Highett and Hampton. The Tjilatjirrin Community Garden in Sandringham (pictured above) is getting ready to plant out its first season. The Garden’s Steering Committee Secretary Martin Curtis (pictured above, second left) said the project has been many years in the making but will all be worth it. “Gardening is a healthy outdoor activity that rewards effort with beautiful fresh produce,” he said. “It’s great to see Council is very positive towards community gardens because they develop resilience and community connections.” Community gardens promote home grown food that has multiple sustainability, environmental and cost saving benefits while also contributing to positive health and wellbeing by fostering deeper connections to nature and each other. Led by Artistic Director of The Consort of Melbourne, Steven Hodgson, our Big Spring Sing project will give local choirs and individuals the chance to join voices in harmony. Steven said the event was a great way for the community to connect and express themselves. “We’ll teach you a little about using your voice as well as some catchy songs to sing together,” said Steven. “You may discover a hidden talent or passion to explore further!” The project is aimed at singers of all levels from professional choirs to amateur singers. Participants will meet every fortnight throughout September, October and November, working towards a community performance. The whole of Bayside will be invited to the Big Spring Sing performance alongside The Consort of Melbourne on 14 December. This free event will be held at Billilla Gardens, Brighton. Curator Joanna Bosse described Asher’s practice as unique and unparalleled within Australian art. “Asher has produced a remarkable body of work over the last seven decades,” she said. “This exhibition focuses on foundational early works (1957- 1979), which established him as a groundbreaking artist. Asher’s unique vision is anchored in his fascination with light, cosmology, science and music, as well as a desire for sensation and beauty.” Many pieces are on loan from private and public collections, making this exhibition as special for the artist as visitors to the gallery. “I am seeing some of my early work for the first time in 60 years,” Asher said. “It is magic to be supported by Council in this way. I hope it opens the eyes of a much broader audience to something new.” Asher Bilu: early works 31 August - 20 October Bayside Gallery, Cnr Wilson and Carpenter Street, Brighton Find out more bayside.vic.gov.au/asherbilu Photo: Mark AshkanasyDance Hall Through Time 1990’s Big City Beats are bringing their internationally acclaimed full costumed, live show to Bayside, taking us back to the 1990s, guaranteed to keep you dancing on the floor the whole night long.
