< Previous10 Let’s Talk Bayside Let the games begin MAJOR PROJECT Hampton United cricketers will be hitting sixes all summer season thanks to the new pavilion at RJ Sillitoe Reserve Pavilion. Officially opened in October, the $3.4m pavilion in Hampton East is an environmentally conscious building that reflects the changing needs of the resident clubs and will support players of all genders and abilities for years to come. The opening celebrates the 16th pavilion completed as part of Council’s $52 million investment to improve all sporting pavilions in Bayside by 2025, with a further nine renewals to go. Hampton United Cricket Club President David Pearce said his impressions of the facility are first rate. “We couldn’t be happier with the look, feel, features and spirt of inclusion that the new pavilion represents,” David said. He also described his time collaborating with Council during the consultation process as a “rewarding ‘work in progress’. In addition to the use of sustainable products such as solar panels, water tanks, electric appliances and sensor lighting, the pavilion features all gender changerooms and umpire facilities, kiosk, increased storage facilities and a facilities that encourage broader community use. Council is hitting it out of the park in time for the summer tenancy period with Hampton United Cricket Club welcoming any aspiring cricketers to become part of its community. The Well St Neighbourhood Park in Brighton (pictured above) was also unveiled recently, just in time for late spring and summer. Local Brighton residents and visitors to the busy Church Street precinct can now enjoy the new natural space to take time out and relax. The new park includes more than 500 native indigenous plants, including grasses, flowering plants and large trees. Other features include outdoor seating, two accessible picnic tables, bike racks, accessible pathways, a waste bin and an important pedestrian route through to Church Street. As part of our Climate Emergency Action Plan, we’re encouraging Baysiders to switch to zero carbon energy. Homeowners, renters and rental property owners located in Bayside can access trustworthy quotes, affordable rates and free advice about solar and government rebates with Solar Savers. Local government initiative Solar Savers is making it easy to install an affordable and quality solar system in your home or business. By installing solar with Solar Savers, you’ll have peace of mind knowing that your installers have been independently evaluated on their safety, product and warranty quality, and value for money. The Brighton Beach Bowls Club is one of the local businesses supported to install solar panels and a battery, thanks to a Climate Emergency Grant. Assistant treasurer of Brighton Beach Bowls Club, Tony Geraghty said the new solar panels and battery are having a big impact on their club. “We needed the battery because we have night-time functions that require the use of electricity,” Tony said. From a social, environmental and economic perspective, Tony said the solar installation will not only help to fight the climate emergency, but also reduce hiring and running costs at the club. “We have a lot of community groups that use the bowls club — including the cancer group, an arts collective and a parent-and-child group — and because now we’ve installed solar, we can keep our hire fees down and won’t have to raise them,” Tony said. Currently in its sixth year, the exhibition presents an eclectic and disparate collection, from landscape painting to intriguing textile pieces, photographic images and experimental ceramic forms. On display from 16 November 2023 until 25 February 2024, you can catch this magnificent exhibition at Bayside Gallery. There are more than 35 local artists featured in the exhibition, including artist Drasko Boljevic, whose work features quirky photographic images of local sites overlaid with painted figures. “The figures have been cut out from old books and then placed onto perspex. Then I photograph a local scene that fits the figure, breathing new life into the setting,” Drasko said. Jacquelyn Stephens is a painter based at Advantage Road arts precinct in Highett, whose themes are informed by science, nature and the environment. Drawing on the beauty of the region in her distinctive and decorative work, Jacquelyn said as a coastal resident, she spends a lot of time walking along the beaches of Sandringham and Ricketts Point. “My painting in the exhibition is about the otherworldliness in those rockpools, at a microscopic, macroscopic and cellular level, because those things are very important to me,” Jacquelyn said.
