To help combat climate change Less decomposing food in landfill means less greenhouse gas (methane) released into the atmosphere. Residents asked us to make the switch Many residents asked for weekly collection of their food and green waste bin to reduce smell and mess, and because their general waste bin doesn’t fill up as quickly. To help safeguard residents from increased costs Victoria is running out of landfill space which is driving up the cost to dispose of waste. This cost is outside of council’s control and is passed directly onto ratepayers via the waste charge on your rates notice. By making this change, we’re helping minimise inevitable cost increases in the future. To recover more valuable resources Food and green waste contains valuable organic nutrients which is recycled into high quality compost used by Victorian farmers. Over 83% of Bayside households use a food and green waste bin, turning their food scraps into compost. 4Food and green waste bin for the win Our food scraps and garden waste is recycled into high-quality compost used by Victorian farmers. If you don’t have a food and green waste bin, you can order one at bayside.vic.gov.au/GoGreen or call 9599 4444. Sort your waste correctly to make more space in your general waste bin. ✔ Put food scraps into the food and green waste bin ✔ Recycle right – check what can be recycled in your blue recycling bin ✔ Rescue soft plastics - drop off soft plastics at major supermarkets, Beaumaris Library or Bayside’s Corporate Centre in Sandringham ✔ Avoid single-use items - use reusable items such as shopping bags, coffee cups, food containers and cutlery whenever you can. Try reusable wraps at home instead of plastic wrap. Bins are smelly - it’s a fact. To reduce the smell: ✔ Sprinkle some bicarb soda in the bin to neutralise smells ✔ Put food waste in compostable bags (labelled AS4736) or wrap in newspaper ✔ Alternate layers of food waste with garden waste like lawn clippings or dry leaves ✔ Store smelly food waste in the freezer until bin day ✔ Store your bins in a shady and well-ventilated area ✔ Rinse your bins from time-to-time, and always keep the lid closed ✔ Wrap dirty nappies tightly in a small bag to reduce the amount of air circulation. Dirty nappies go in the general waste bin ✔ Put pet waste in a poo bag and tie tightly. Pet waste goes in the general waste bin ✔ Consider cloth nappies – if this is an option you’d like to explore, please visit: bayside.vic.gov.au/Nappies 7Changing your bin size Households with specific needs There are some households in Bayside who may have unavoidable higher general waste needs and are eligible for a free larger or additional general waste bin. This includes households with: • Six or more members • Two or more children in nappies • A person living with a chronic illness or disability • A carer of someone living with a chronic illness or disability. Other households After trying your best to minimise general waste, you may find you need a different bin size to accommodate the change in collection. If you still have space in your standard 140 litre general waste bin, you can downsize to an 80 litre and save money on your waste charge in your rates. Larger or additional bins come in different sizes and are available for an increased cost. • 80 litre • 140 litre • 240 litre. To change your bin size, find out costs or apply for a free upgrade visit: bayside.vic.gov.au/BinChanges or call 9599 4444. Eligibility requirements apply. More than half of what ends up in the average general waste bin can be recycled. Sort your waste correctly to make space in your general waste bin. 8Standardising your bins Every council in Victoria is required to transition to a standardised waste collection system with uniform bin colours and names by 2027. These changes include: • General waste will be called household rubbish and have a red lid • Food and green waste will be called food organics and garden organics (FOGO) and have a green lid • Recycling will be called mixed recycling and have a yellow lid • New glass bins will have a purple lid. This is part of the Victorian Government’s Circular Economy Strategy to cut waste and boost reuse and recycling. The aim is to have the same household bin system, no matter where you live. A new look for your general waste bin In Bayside, we’re introducing new general waste bins with a black body and red lid to replace our current dark-green general waste bins. The roll-out will commence in September 2022, however from May if you order a new general waste bin, it will be one of the new bins. Old dark-green bins will be recycled and turned into new bins. We won’t be changing the recycling bin or introducing a separate glass service just yet but we will keep you informed when we do. CURRENT BINNEW BIN 9Next >
